Exploring golf's remarkable places.

Golf has been a constant presence throughout my life. I came to the game at a young age, almost by accident—but perhaps it was inevitable. My family roots reach back to Scotland’s County Ross, a place where the land, its history and the game of golf are deeply intertwined. What began as a youthful fascination became a lifelong passion.

Through a career in international relations, I have been fortunate to play courses on every continent—from remarkable local gems to some of the world’s most celebrated venues. Along the way, I have come to see golf as much more than a game.

This website is a place to explore that wider world of golf, with course features and profiles, stories about the game and the people who make it compelling, and explorations of course architecture and design. I’ll be interested not only in famous venues and championship golf, but also in hidden gems, distinctive characters and overlooked stories that make the game so fascinating.

Following the publication of my 2026 book, The World’s Greatest Golf Courses, I am now working on a new volume celebrating the great golf courses of the United States, scheduled for release in 2027. I live in the Ottawa region of Canada, where I continue to walk the fairways, discover new courses and occasionally convince myself that there are more birdies than bogeys ahead.

Have a story idea? Know a course that deserves to be featured? I’d love to hear from you. Get in touch and tell me what—or who—you think belongs in the conversation. There is always another course to discover, another story to tell, and another reason to love the game.
